And the winner is…

It’s been an exciting week for familiesrecommend.co.uk.

Earlier this week we found out that we’d be shortlisted for the final of the National Remote Worker Awards sponsored by BT Business. These awards celebrate the businesses that are run from home or employ staff on a remote / flexible basis. We were pretty excited in June when we were told we made the semi finals, but to reach the finals is something else. Anyway, we been busy getting organised for this and now have our tickets booked, hotel room and rail travel sorted, baby sitter arranged – all we need to do now is attend and meet all the other finalists, special guests and the media.

We are not sure of the total number of people who will be there or even how many other businesses we are up against, but from the businesses that we’ve been tweeting to about it, there is some great competition, so we just don’t know how we will fair. However, we are both looking forward to the event, and a night away in London is an additional bonus.

Sarah found out she was a semi finalist for the 2010 Mumpreneur awards. Unfortunately she didn’t make the final, but she’s very pleased that she managed to get down to the final 12 or so in her category. She’ll be attending the awards in September and meeting lots of likeminded business mums.

We could never have gone this far without our brilliant users. Familiesrecommend is only as good as the content that it receives and our thanks go out to everyone for making our site worthy of running for an award. Fingers crossed that an upcoming post will bring good news!

I am flattered!

You may remember a little while ago I posted on the blog a logo and blurb for a website called Dadtalk.co.uk. I found it to be an interesting site and thought that other people might too. I decided to contact them to see if they would like me to write something for their blog. They responded by not only saying a big fat YES but they asked if I could put something together over the next 4 Mondays in August….on Staycationing! Something I have a bit of experience in. Needless to say I have jumped at the chance. You can read my first post by clicking the link here and I will be on their site over the coming three Mondays in August.
Thank you very much Dadtalk.co.uk. I am delighted!

Twitter, Facebook, the whole nine yards

From previous posts even I can see the evolution of social media in the day to day running of familiesrecommend.co.uk. I was not really a fan of Facebook in the beginning but now I see a whole new side of it.
Then Twitter came along. I was not really a fan of Twitter in the beginning but now I see a whole new side of it too.
Because of both we have been in contact with people we would otherwise never have met and people have found us into the bargain. Ironically, it was Twitter where Sarah “met” Social Small Biz. An online resource for small or medium businesses to improve the ways they use social media. Sarah contacted them and they kindly asked us if we would mind being one of their case studies which of course we were happy to oblige. The case study can be found here.

Another website in which we were featured a little while ago was the Enterprise Nation website. Sarah and I were featured on their site having given a Qand;A about how familiesrecommend was dreamt up and how we work together. It was this very site, and in particular, Emma who passed on our details to Laura at rentabuggy.co.uk who then made contact with us. The upshot is that we are now all Twittering and Laura is very kindly supporting our upcoming 1st birthday party. We think Laura’s business is genius – so we would definitely recommend you check it out.

Details will follow soon about our birthday celebrations once we have all of the details in place. Suffice to say we have had a really good response to social media and have met a lot of like minded people out there. Its just a shame we cant all meet up for a pint!

Seven things you didn’t know about Families Recommend

We’ve been tagged! And I am really chuffed that someone would tag me in the ‘seven things you didn’t know about me’. Thank you Michelle at Baby Dines Out, yet again you’ve made me smile. And somedays that doesn’t happen often! I’ve never met Michelle in person and we’ve only exchanged a few emails, but I have read her blog and she seems like she is my kind of person She likes the nice things in life and doesn’t like to compromise on quality. here here.

When thinking about this 7 things blog, I couldn’t decide whether it should be 7 things you didn’t know about families recommend or 7 things you didn’t know about me (Sarah). So I have decided to do both.

Families Recommend

1. The idea for the website came about when we had some really bad treatment at a pub in a market town in North Yorkshire. We were told that we couldn’t take the baby into the bar (even though they served food there) – fair enough, and were told we could eat in the restaurant instead as it served the same meals there too. However, we couldn’t take the pram into the restaurant, we could leave it at the front door while we ate. Firstly, no one in their right mind is going to leave an expensive pram in an open doorway are they? And secondly, and more importantly our 8 month old son was fast asleep, so we were not going to a) wake him so we could eat or b) leave him in the doorway while we ate. Now I would understand if the restaurant was small and there was no space for a pram, but believe me there was space and plenty of tables where the pram with sleeping child could have been parked without getting in anyone’s way. So we declined the offer of food there and obviously annoyed as we walked away discussed between us wouldn’t it be good if there was a website where people shared their experiences of family friendly and not so friendly places. And there you go http://www.familiesrecommend.co.uk/ was born!

[ok long winded, but now I've got that off my chest, the rest will be much simpler!]

2. Familiesrecommend is run by me and my husband in our spare time. We are what you call 5 to 9 ers. ie we run our business after we come home from our day jobs. We hope it won’t always be this way. I hear there is a roll over on the lottery tomorrow……

3.It took us ages to launch the website, about 5 months after we first got a view of it from our designer. Perhaps we were nervous people wouldn’t like it or wouldn’t visit it……

4. It’s been a rollercoaster. Since launching 12 months ago, we got no one, then we got some visitors, and then we got more visitors and then we got a few more!

5. It’s our birthday next month- 1 year since launching live to the world. Join us from 8 May for great articles (including one by Michelle of Baby Dines Out), birthday messages, fabulous money off offers and free giveaways!

6. We’ve met (and virtually met) some fantastic people in the last year and they inspire us everyday.

7. Running a website is hard work especially when you work in another job for a living. But we enjoy it, even if the nights are late, the wine is always chilled!

Ok the 7 things you didn’t know about me (Sarah incase you were wondering).

1. In my day job I am a senior analyst. If you can work out what this means let me know!

2. I dream of giving up #1 and working from home, running my website and making a decent living from it.

3. I hate injustice or big organisations trying to step on little people. And I will fight these injustices however I can – like walking 13 miles from one hospital to another hospital to highlight the distance parents with premature babies had to travel becuase of the closure of their local special care baby unit.  (I wasn’t alone and we had politicians and the press to see us off on our long walk).

4. I had a premature baby (10 weeks to be precise).

5. My favourite food is pickled onion Monster Munch crisps!

6. I am gutted that ITV is cancelling The Bill. It’s my all time favourite programme

7. For the first time in my life, I have no idea who to vote for in the upcoming election. Feels both a bit wierd and also a bit freeing. Come on parties, here’s your chance to impress me.

Winter may have passed but the snowball is getting bigger!

Things have been moving at a pretty fast pace over the last week, and in particular, the last few days. I mentioned in my last blog entry that things were going on in the background. One of them is the work that Sarah has put in in publicising the site. It started in December when Sarah did a Q&A with Enterprise Nation. It is the UK’s largest website for people starting and growing a business from home. A great piece that we were very thankful for. This has lead to a lot of interest from other quarters. In March this year Sarah wrote an article for Mums Rock on how to make it in business with the other half…or me, to be clear. Then earlier this month Mumpreneur published an article on based upon flexible family working. Great publicity that we are very grateful for. Thank you.

Whilst all of this has been going on we have been receiving recommendations from all sorts of places. One in particular was feedback for a great website, 1st Unique Gifts. Had a very pleasant chat with the owner tonight. I hope to receive more recommendations from her satisfied customers in the near future. Well done on a great site!

There are other little things in the pipeline that I hope to bring to you soon including a feature being published on social media. Where will all this end?

M’aider, M’aider…("Help me", for the rest of us non French speakers!)

It seems like a long time since Christmas. The never ending snow and ice, the dark nights and the threat of heating bills causing us all financial ruin in 2010 seemed to be a symptom of the winter months. However now we are embracing the beginning of better times with an hours less sleep…Not a great start but things can only get better!

It has been a little while since our last post and that is for a good reason. We have been busy in the background sorting out, quite literally, the background. From “the front end” of the website it would appear that all we do is submit the recommendations of what our loyal army of familiesrecommend users send to us on a daily basis. Whilst this is largely true, what is also important is what goes on in the background that actually makes the site tick. Let me tell you it is not easy. I bought books on it hoping that I would be able to make sense of this new language. I dont mind telling you,  it brought feelings back to me that I have not felt since being put on the spot in GCSE French. The teacher asks you the way to the station and you tell her not only where you can buy a baguette but that you enjoy going to the cinema with friends in your spare time. It is humiliating…Mrs Foggett. God love you though. You did your best to try and stop me from getting lost if I ever went to France later in life. Only now I appreciate your efforts. It’s not you its me!

Anyhow, back to reality. After many cups of coffee and hours of head scratching I decided that I was old enough to tell language teachers that I did not care for their choice of language no matter how charming it might be and that they should speak it for me. A wholly safer strategy. In a caffeinated haze I set about finding such angels. To cut a long story short I found someone who speaks the language of the internet and agreed to help. At this point I dont want to say too much more other than a thank you to Maureen. I promise I will spill the beans on who she is soon but I have to keep a few secrets.

With all of this going on, the 1st birthday of familiesrecommend is just around the corner. We have been busy putting together some great offers that we are going to bring to our users. A provisional thank you to our generous supporters for offering some great deals to us to pass on. I will name names in a few days and also link you up. I just want to make sure that I have everybody included.

Until next time which will be a lot sooner than three months…promise
